Mekhala Learning - Computer Resource Centre
In recent times FDCC has evolved as an organisation and we are now in a position to expand our reach further across Prey Veng province. Our latest project that we have received funding for from The Australian Embassy in Cambodia and The Planet Wheeler Foundation will be opened in August 2009. We have received fantastic support also from Telstra Australia’s Helping Hands program who have donated laptops, logistics and technical support to realise this project.
This project involves creating a Computer Resource Centre that would provide computing lessons, internet lessons, English lessons, and a community library, all free of charge, for underprivileged children in Kompong Leav District, Prey Veng Province.
The project’s target area will include:
beneficiaries from the Secondary Schools and High Schools located in a 7km radius from the Prey Veng Town centre, which includes villages in Kompong Leav DistrictThe objectives of this project are:
To widen the opportunities for underprivileged children in the Prey Veng community and diversify job prospects
To improve the quality and variety of skills of underprivileged children in the Prey Veng community
To increase the rural communities’ access to the same jobs as urban communities
To increase the communities’ access to information
To build capacity amongst students, teachers and project managersThis project will benefit:
Underprivileged secondary and high school students in the target area (directly)
Staff who work at the Computer Resource Centre in terms of providing them with employment and building their capacity in teaching (directly)
Staff who implement this project in terms of building their capacity in project management (directly)
The families of the students who receive the opportunity to gain a competitive education in subjects that will result in better jobs which will assist the whole family to increase their income and in turn their standard of living (indirectly)
The Prey Veng community as the overall standard of living begins to improve (indirectly)The need is evident in the:
High level of students who cannot afford to go to private school
Lack of resources available, which have restricted the provision of these subjects in public schools and vocational training centres
Requirement of prospective employers to employ people with English and/or computing skills
Obstacles in accessing information that is available through English language and the internetThe immediate results are:
40 students will graduate with well-rounded Computer skills, Internet skills and related English skills within 6 months
An unlimited number of townspeople will have access to a community libraryThe long-term benefits are:
The Prey Veng community will have more opportunities to compete for jobs with their urban counterparts
Jobs will be diversified in Prey Veng Town where there is a dependence on agriculture, shifting jobs away from low-earning farming to higher wage earning sectors like Industry and Services
Underprivileged people in the Prey Veng community being able to break-free of the poverty cycle
